ITrue X3 Review

Updated on July 29, 2023

The ITrue X3 dash cam with night vision is a neat little 1080p high definition in-car camera that records videos of the road ahead, sitting discreetly on the dashboard or mounted on the front windshield of your vehicle. A car cam can serve a multitude of purposes, the primary of these being to record footage of your truck making its way through traffic.

These days there are plenty of dangerous vehicles and unruly drivers that fill the roads. If you have a documented video of the crazy driver or pedestrian, it becomes easier for you to claim damages in the event of an accident or to ward off claims. One of the good things about these small pieces of technology is that they are discreet, run tapping into the power source of your vehicle, and can shoot continuously without failure, for as long as your car is turned on. Let’s take a further look at the popular ITrue X3 and its main features in the latest dash camera reviews from the in-house Gurus.

Lens

The ITrue X3 dash cam with night vision has a lens that is composed of 6-layers. The lens has an ultra-wide coverage of 170 degrees which is the same as most of the top-rated devices such as the Vantrue N2 and the slick Falcon Zero Touch HD which are all the same angle. This is as close as you can get without getting into a true fish-eye domain. A 170-degree field of view coverage allows you to capture everything in front of the windshield from an in-car perspective. State-of-the-art Wide Dynamic Range (WDR) technology ensures that your new 1080p dash cam can pull more details from low-lit areas which are handy when you are driving at night or through tunnels and underpasses.

Video Recording

ITrue X3 Screen and Buttons On The SideThe ITrue X3 starts recording almost as soon as you turn on the ignition. It captures full-HD videos at 1920 x 1080p at 30 fps in a MOV format. Audio is picked up too via the built-in mic, though you could optionally choose to switch off the audio feature if desired. To get started, simply insert a MicroSD or TF Card, and it is good to go. The impressive car camera recorder supports up to 32 GB external storage card. An 8 GB memory card is provided in the package but this is low for what we’d consider one of the best dash cams for sale in 2023.

GPS is supported via the dedicated input port. You will need to buy a separate GPS device for inputting the desired data to the video being taken. GPS data translates into the speed of the vehicle, direction, and route taken and is then embedded into the video. Speed data is essential when recording the videos; this is a handy piece of information for insurance and other purposes.

The ability to take full HD video means that your dashboard camera can pull in a high amount of detail in any event. Add the fact that the lens here has ultra-wide-angle coverage means you can document a large section of the road ahead.

The ITrue X3 can save videos in loops. Loop recording suggests that videos are continuously saved in small clips of fixed duration. This duration can, however, be changed from the menu. Continuous loop recording ensures that once the dashcam runs out of storage, it overwrites the older videos. This, however, can be overwritten using the memory lock feature as described below.

Parking Monitor / Motion Detector

Like most of the top-rated dash cams nowadays this too has motion detection, which allows for small videos to be recorded which can work as vital pieces of information in the event your vehicle is tampered with by vandals.

Memory Lock Gravity Sensing

When buying a car cam ensure that the device has a gravity sensor with auto-lock. The gravity sensor is a technology that senses sudden changes in gravity, which can occur at any time. This usually happens when your vehicle is in an accident, has flipped over, makes an unexpected turn on high speed, etc. In any such event, the sensor inside the dashcam will lock the video being recorded. Locking the video prevents it from being overwritten when the dashboard camera records videos in a loop.

Apart from the gravity-sensing auto-lock feature, there is also a dedicated lock button that does the same thing if you need to lock any section of video to memory for whatever reason.

Heat Resistance

ITrue X3 Traveling Data Recorder

The ability to withstand heat is an essential requirement for devices in hotter climates. The ITrue X3 dash cam is rated to withstand temperatures of between 10˚F to 140˚F; the manufacturer recommends removing the camera when it is parked under the sun in temperatures beyond this.

Ergonomics and Technology

While the overall design is a sleek, rounded, and smooth large lens element at the front of the in-car camera is what dominates the design, giving it a real retro look. The design is small enough to fit behind the rear view mirror of your vehicle. To reduce reflections from shiny plastic and metal elements underneath, the front surface has been wrapped in stitched leather styling which looks and feels very high quality indeed.

The large 2.7” LCD screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio is perfect for reviewing the videos taken by the dashcam and for changing the settings around.

Wide Dynamic Range

ITrue X3 Full Kit Including SD Card and CablesWide Dynamic Range on the ITrue X3 is a neat little feature. Dynamic range denotes the range of tones between pure black and pure white in a scene. In a low light situation, dynamic range is generally reduced to a higher percentage of darker tones, with a majority of them reduced to pure black. With WDR technology you can pull in more details out of the dark areas in a scene that’s poorly lit.

Setting It Up

Thankfully, the ITrue X3 dash cam comes with a series of cables and other accessories. An in-car charging cable taps into the power system. The built-in battery will work in critical situations such as when the car has suddenly stopped or has been involved in a crash, and the ignition was switched off. The backup power on the battery is enough to save the last saved video.

A suction mount holder is provided to hold the in-car camera steady on the windshield. You need a smooth surface for the suction cup to have a tight seal. Most vehicles have a textured dashboard which makes setting up the suction cup on the dash impossible. The suction cup mount can be rotated 360˚ which is ideal in case you want to pick up anything that’s happening at the side of the vehicle or inside it. The package also has a USB cable for downloading videos.

The Verdict

This is an excellent piece of accessory for your vehicle, an investment that will pay for itself in the event there is an accident. Aesthetically it may not suit every taste, but that can be said for every dash cam for sale on the market. However it’s not about how good it looks, it’s about how good it performs, and we as Gurus in this niche were thoroughly impressed with its overall performance.
