APEMAN C420 Review

Updated on August 22, 2023

The APEMAN C420 dash cam retains the lightweight nature of other versions of the APEMAN dash cams but packs a tag of affordability and reliability. If you’ve tried the APEMAN C450 model, you’ll realize that the C420 is its smaller and slightly cheaper version.

The build is solid and has a small compact footprint making it easy to mount it behind the rear mirror perfectly. From such a position, the cam can get a wide view of the road, delivering 1080p of videos both during the day and night.

Ease Of Use

Setting up the camera is easy. Typically, in 2 minutes, it will up and running. The best part is it automatically starts recording when the engine starts. Buttons are well-placed, while the TFT LCD display screen allows you to view the videos.

What’s even more impressive is the mounting system. It comes with a suction mount and a groove to mount on the windshield. And, once you fit, you can rotate a bit but not entirely.

APEMAN C420 Video Recording Features

apeman c420

According to the camera specifications, the APEMAN C420 records videos at 30 frames per second in 1080p resolution. Such is high-quality video, to the extent that it captures fast-moving objects without any fuzziness or lagging.

It’s true; the C420 captures high-quality videos both during the day and night. It features an advanced sensor – Starvis Sensor, which works together with 170° ultra-wide-angle all-glass lens to deliver impressive footage. In essence, it monitors 3 lanes without distortion of the lens – which implies it captures more details by reducing blind spots.

Though not an IR camera, the C420 beats other cameras when it comes to night visions. Users say, for its price, it is the best alternative.

Here’s why:

The Sensor

The sensor is built explicitly for night vision. You’ll agree with me that the starvis is among the best tech pieces for security cameras. The sensor is specially made to record videos even in low light intensity. The sensors are large, have a wide aperture and a slower shutter speed. Thus, they collect enough light on the number plate identification and human faces.

In this case, the APEMAN C420 features an f/1.8 large aperture with a 170-degree wide-angle lens. It simply implies you get all the details during the day and night.

Video Storage

The camera records videos in 3-minutes chunks. But you can also record your videos in 5 or 10-minute chunks. One crucial factor you must know is that each recording takes the same space on the SD card. For example, if you set your camera to 5-minute snippets, every 5 minutes is a separate file. Now, here is where it complicates things. If you record 7 minutes, it means you have 2 files, i.e., a 5-minute file and a 2-minute file. The 2-minute file takes up 100% of the space that a 5-minute recording would take. It feels inefficient and uneconomical, right? You might consider choosing the 3-minute recording to save on space.

The manufacturer recommends using a Class 10 micro SD card of 32 GB. It is not included in the pack, so you have to buy it separately. Again, you need to format the SD card before you use it.

Other features:

  • Loop recording and G-sensor: It’s essential to turn on these features all the time. Once turned on the dashcam records continually, i.e., it overwrites previous (older) videos. Again, when the cam detects a shock or a collision, it locks the current video, preventing attempts to overwrite it. So you have your evidence protected.
  • 24/7 monitoring: The dashcam has a car recorder that has a motion detector and a parking monitor. These are essential security features for this device. Actually, the APEMAN C420 will start to record automatically in the event of collisions or shakes.
Pros
  • Affordable pricing
  • Compact and lightweight
  • Easy to use. Just plug in, and it begins to work. Again, it offers a single button operation, i.e., top button
  • You have 2 cables, i.e., shorter and longer cable for easier installation
  • The suction mount works incredibly well
Cons
  • Feels a little cheap
  • Records large-sized files, which take up much of the storage space

The Verdict

The APEMAN C420 is suitable for the job. Though it may lack some features found in other high-end dashcams like GPS, it still offers decent videos, and it comes at an affordable price. So if you are out looking for a cheap dash cam that can do a decent job, do not hesitate to get this one.
