Lens

The Auto-Vox D1 has an f/1.6 six-glass multi-layer filter lens. F/1.6 is a super-fast lens. It is considered fast because the wider the aperture, the lighter it can capture. This ensures a brighter, more noise-free recording, even in low-light situations. The field of view of this in-car camera is a respectable 145 degrees. Some customers will complain that this is nowhere near as much compared to some of the other dash cam reviews on this site, but for all conceivable reasons, 145 degrees is good enough. Plus, the neat-looking device can be rotated 360 degrees allowing you far greater coverage than most fixed dashboard cameras.

Recording

Auto Vox D1 Lens and MountThe Auto-Vox D1 records videos in full-HD in loops of 2, 3, and 5 minutes. Smaller file sizes may be advisable in case you wish to review what has been captured and save some of the videos to an external drive. Videos are continuously recorded in loops. Meaning, when the built-in car DVR runs out of memory, it overwrites the older files starting from the oldest. On a side note, the Auto-Vox D1 has a high-capacity battery that can record up to four days in case you leave your vehicle behind and leave town for a few days, making things possible for a considerable length of time.

Dimensions and Weight

Not exactly the smallest dash cam, it measures a considerable 5.6 x 4.5 x 3.2”, but as you can see from the design, it is not like some of the bulky and cheap dash cams you may be used to seeing. It weighs a mere 15.2 ounces.

Motion Detector

The D1 comes with a motion detector feature. The motion detector feature basically is what it says. Motion detection comes in handy when you leave your vehicle behind at a parking lot. Let’s say a thief attempts to pry open the door and gain access or another car bumps into yours when it is parked. In such events, the in-car camera will detect the movement and make a quick shot of footage. This will come in handy in the event you want to make a claim against the culprit vehicle or individual.

Memory Lock Gravity Sensing

A much-loved feature that this model boasts is the gravity sensor; this is a must-have requirement for all car dash cams. The gravity sensor works as an accident recorder. You would argue that the primary purpose of having any dash cam in your vehicle is so you can save any accidents to the car DVR and playback when required. So, why is added importance given to this feature? The reason is normally, these gadgets record in loops. This means small clips of 2, 3, 5 minutes are saved until the DVR runs out of memory. When it runs out of memory, the high-definition dash cam will automatically overwrite older files. This is potentially disastrous if the memory card has a clip of a past event that you want to save. To avoid this from happening car cameras with gravity sensing and memory lock features do this – a video being taken at the time of an accident is automatically saved and locked in the DVR memory. This prevents it from getting overwritten during normal loop recording.

Wide Dynamic Range

The Auto-Vox D1 has what is termed as Wide Dynamic Range (WDR). WDR is an essential technology that ensures that your dashboard camera is able to pick up much larger levels of light. This technology is very similar to High Dynamic Range used in expensive DSLR and point-and-shoot devices. The same technique is used to produce images with corrected light levels using post-processing software.

Ordinarily, the human eye can see about 11-12 stops of light (stops refer to levels of light). But the advantage of the human eye is that it can quickly adjust to different levels of light in a scene, unlike a camera that can only adapt to a single frame at a time. The human eye practically sees many frames instantaneously. Thus it can see up to 14 stops of light when it adjusts to different areas of brightness in the scene.

Speaking of wider dynamic range, the Auto-Vox D1 has excellent night vision capabilities. This comes in handy when you are driving after dark, as well as when your car is parked overnight and the recorder is set to parking monitor mode.

Setting It Up

Auto-Vox D1 - 3 Step InstallationInstallation is easy. It comes with a patent-pending suction cup mount for easy and hassle-free installation. No need to permanently scar the windshield of your vehicle with a 3M adhesive. Plus a 3 GB card is also provided in the box so that you can get up and running in no time. 32 GB is a very decent capacity, and you would most likely not want to upgrade, which is excellent value at this price compared to others like the Xiaomi YI Dashcam which is of a similar price point and comes without a card at all.

The package also contains a micro USB cable and a USB car charger. The micro USB cable connects with a computer or laptop for the transfer of the videos. The USB car charger is used for powering the device.

Still Images

Like almost every other car camera recorder on the market, it too can take high-resolution stills. Although it is a capable device, you wouldn’t necessarily compare it with a DSLR or even a point and shoot.

The Verdict

For a product which borders mid – expensive, this is a fantastic device for any vehicle. For a number of reasons, this dashboard camera is a no-frills kind of investment whether you own a truck, car or SUV. The most significant plus point of the device is the lens. At f/1.6 it is truly sensational. Excellent night vision and WDR capabilities are two other essential features it boasts. Add to it the parking monitor feature powered by motion detection and the powerful battery which allows it to shoot for up to 4 days in parking monitor mode. For the price, you also get a 32 GB card which means you don’t need to order one to use this straight out of the box. Of all the recent reviews, this is one that stands out for all the right reasons and is a great choice for the money paid.

    • Hi George,

Playback can be achieved 2 ways. The first is through the Menu system. Alternatively, if you have an SD card reader, you could insert the SD card into a reader and playback on your laptop / PC. Also the flashing lights on the front usually mean the camera is in record mode. Hope this helps.

  1. How do you format this camera? A message keeps coming up format error, I go to format in the menu and it comes up SD card and nothing happens.

  2. I just bought one of these dash cams 4 days ago(2/10/18)as of this email and now all of a sudden it says format error and memory error. I didn’t do anything to it. Can anybody tell me what happened and how can I fix it? Also does anybody know what the customer service phone number is 4 Auto-Vox? Please Email me and let me know. Thank U.

  3. I am wanting to view videos from my dash cam but they are not appearing on the app, there are not many on there. Is there an alternative way to recover them?

    Thanks
