Product Review

Lens

The WheelWitness comes with an ultra-wide-angle lens that captures a field of view that is a stunning 170 degrees, which means the super high definition dash cam can see and record a full A-pillar to A-pillar view of what’s happening in the front of your car.

Recording

WheelWitness HD PRO front and rear view of lens and screenThe camera is rated to have a resolution of 2560 x 1080 pixels or a slightly wider 2306 x 1296 pixels. In both settings, the resolution is super HD meaning the videos produced are crisp and extremely clear. The high-definition dash cam comes with a free 8 GB MicroSD card, so all you need is to plug the MicroSD card into the slot, power it up, and it’s ready to go.

The device comes with the standard loop recording feature, which means it can continue recording for as long as there is a memory card in the slot. When the memory card is exhausted older files are automatically overwritten. There are advantages and disadvantages to this system. Obviously, you have an always-on system that records continuously, but on the flip side, if you don’t back up the older files, they are at risk of getting overwritten when the memory card is exhausted.

Motion Detector

Motion detection is a highly sought-after feature on dash cams. This feature is all about surveillance when your vehicle is not moving. Let’s say it is parked outside, and you have just hopped out to pick up some groceries. In the meantime, if suspected car thieves try to pry open your vehicle, this dashboard camera will make a record of the event. Basically, if anything moves in the near vicinity and within the field of view of the car, a recording will be made.

Memory Lock Gravity Sensing

Gravity sensing and memory lock is yet another feature included here. Gravity sensing is all about sensing when the vehicle undergoes a sudden change in gravity. This usually happens when the car accelerates suddenly or comes to a sudden stop while being driven at high speed. In both instances, accidents are a prime reason. When either of these or other gravity-changing events happen, the device will detect the sudden acceleration or deceleration and will make a quick video of the event. The video will, in further, be locked to ensure that it does not get overwritten during normal loop recording.

Wide Dynamic Range

HD PRO Lens and Suction MountThe term WDR is actually an acronym for Wide Dynamic Range. This is a technology that is similar to High Dynamic Range that is frequently referred to in relation to digital photography. It is all about how many stops of light that your camera/camcorder/car dash cam can see between the brightest white and the darkest black in the image. The wider that spectrum is, the higher the dynamic range of your device. In other words, that many stops of light your camera can see and record.

The human eye can see about 10-14 stops of light, barring a few exceptions. That is closer if not better than most advanced DSLR’s. A smaller sensor camera, such as the point & shoots well as dash cams do not have the same dynamic range. Yet, having said that, the device does have a better-than-normal dynamic range when compared to other dash cams for sale in its category.

GPS

The WheelWitness HD PRO is GPS enabled. This means you don’t need an ancillary GPS plugin for saving GPS data. There is a bunch of such integrated GPS dash cams available in the market (such as the Garmin Dash Cam 20, or the KDLINKS X1), but this one comes with integrated Google Maps feature to tell you exactly what your location is when driving. Navigating while driving may not always be easy so always keep an eye on the road when holding the steering wheel. The other advantage is that the videos recorded are embedded with the GPS data, letting prosecutors know the direction and speed of your vehicle at the instance of an accident. This helps in setting aside false and baseless claims as well as also helps establish the fault of the offending vehicle.

Setting It Up

WheelWitness HD PRO Kit Including SD Card and MountAn array of accessories are provided with this dashboard camera for a hassle-free easy mount. You get 2 sticky mounts, 1 suction cup and a power chord to connect it to the cigarette lighter outlet on your car for easy set-up. Before that pop-in the provided 8 GB memory card, and you are ready to rock ‘n roll. The built-in battery is a smallish 450 mAh Li-Ion one and can shoot for about 10-15 minutes when fully charged.

Video Set Up

There are a bunch of setups that you can tweak. You can change the exposure compensation to ensure that more or less light is captured. Usually, the built-in metering and auto-exposure feature do a great job.

Dimensions And Weight

The back of the car dash cam is dominated by a large 3” TFT LCD screen. It shows you live-view of what’s being picked up by the car camera recorder and can also be used to replay any footage that has already been taken. The product measures 3.9” x 1.2” x 1.9” and weighs about 5 ounces.

The Verdict

This super high definition dash cam is a fascinating device indeed. Not only is the video quality crystal clear for the money, but with added features such as integrated GPS, full installation kit, included MicroSD card and 2 sticky mounts plus 1 suction cup, it is a very valuable piece of technology that shouldn’t be bypassed. Moderately priced within its high-end category, we think this one will cause quite a stir in the coming months for all the right reasons.
